We are delighted to announce that we have a winner for the Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2024 t-shirt design competition!

Our judges faced a huge task when presented with 419 entries from individuals and schools across the country. In the end it was the design of Holly from Alness Academy which caught their eye as the best candidate to be the official t-shirt design for Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2024. Here is Holly holding her winning design. Didn’t she do well?

We would like to thank everyone who took part, and also extend a special thank you to school staff who took the time to scan the entries and send them along. The t-shirt will be available for purchase next year and of course the first one will be sent to Holly herself!

Thèid barrachd air 100 tachartas a chumail an ath-sheachdain air feadh na h-Alba fad Seachdain na Gàidhlig – dè nì thu fhèin?

Tha sinn a-nis an dùil ri barrachd air 100 tachartas is pròiseact rè Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023, eadar ball-coise, filmichean is cèilidhean, do choimhearsnachdan air feadh na h-Alba agus an t-saoghail eadar 20mh agus 26mh dhen Ghearran 2023. Chuir iad air bhog roghadh is taghadh de ghoireasan air loidhne agus tha an luchd-stiùiridh ag ràdh gu bheil mòran dhaoine, bhuidhnean coimhearsnachd agus buidhnean eile a’ clàradh nan tachartasan aca fhathast airson prògram na bliadhna-sa.

’S e A’ tighinn còmhla sluagh-ghairm Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023 is tha e airson daoine a thoirt cruinn sna coimhearsnachdan aca fhèin airson soirbheas ciad Seachdain na Gàidhlig ann an 2022 a chumail a’ dol. Chuir Seachdain na Gàidhlig an cèill o chionn goirid gu bheil dà thosgaire ùr aca, Choirstaidh Iona NicArtair, tè a tha an sàs iomadh ealain agus Iain Urchadain a tha na chraoladair, òraidiche agus bàrd, agus tha e a’ toirt cruinn daoine, ge be cò iad no cò às a bheil iad, a bhrosnachadh, a chleachdadh agus a dh’ionnsachadh na Gàidhlig, slighe lìonra de thachartasan co-òrdanaichte air loidhne agus far loidhne, taing do thaic Bhòrd na Gàidhlig.

Tha am prògram seo a’ toirt brosnachadh do dhuine sam bith tachartas a chur air dòigh no a ruith iad fhèin mar phàirt dhen t-seachdain agus, a’ chiad uair am bliadhna, le pròiseactan a fhuair maoineachadh dìreach o Sheachdain na Gàidhlig tro mhaoin nan tabhartasan beaga aca.

Fhuair sinn barrachd air 60 tagradh airson tabhartasan agus sgrùd panail de dhaoine iad seo, a’ gabhail a-staigh Joy Dunlop, Steven Kellow, Oifigear Maoineachaidh is Phròiseactan aig Bòrd na Gàidhlig agus Art MacCormaig, Àrd-oifigear Gnìomha aig Fèisean nan Gàidheal; agus chaidh 51 pròiseact a chur air dòigh mar phàirt dhen phrògram ùr a bheir seachad maoineachadh dìreach.

Am measg nan tachartasan maoinichte a chaidh fhoillseachadh san sgeideal air an làrach-lìn aca tha bùth-obrach le Albannach Òg a theagasgas mar a bhios tu nad chruthadair susbaint Ghàidhlig agus “Loch Abar Beò!” le Màiri Anna NicUalraig o Watercolour Music air an 25mh latha dhen Ghearran. Latha de sheiseanan ciùil thradaiseanta, cearclan còmhraidh Gàidhlig aig gach ìre, prosbaig air ceòl is film agus sàr chuirm-chiùil aig an deireadh le ceithir sàr dhithisean ciùil o chridhe Loch Abar. Aig deireadh na seachdaine, bidh “Fàilte @ Bonjour” ann an Glaschu Didòmhnaich 26mh dhen Ghearran dhan fheadhainn aig cridhe a’ bhaile, a’ gabhail a-staigh panail leis an tè-rannsachaidh Iona Mercer, tè-chiùil Josie NicDhonnchaidh, cruthadair susbaint Etta May Olley agus riochdairean a’ Chomuinn Oiseanaich agus Cuèir agus Còmhla, a’ crìochnachadh le pàrtaidh le tè-ealain draga Purina Alpha agus ceòl le DJ; Danyo.

Tha na beachd-smuaintean is planaichean a tha daoine a’ cur thugainn o cheithir ceàrnan an t-saoghail a’ toirt sìor bhrosnachadh dhuinn; agus cha bhiodh a’ mhòrchuid dhiubh ann as aonais a’ mhaoineachaidh a bharrachd a thug Bòrd na Gàidhlig dhuinn.

“Ma tha daoine eile ann a tha airson tachartas a chur air chois fhathast, tadhlaibh air an làrach-lìn oifigeach againnwww.seachdainnagaidhlig.scot, agus dèanaibh feum dhe na goireasan taice an-asgaidh againn. No ma tha cuideigin airson ciad cheum a thoirt air an turas Ghàidhlig aca fhèin ’s iad an imcheist mu na nì iad, cuiribh fios thugainn tron làrach-lìn againn – tha sinn deas ri do làimh gus do chuideachadh.”

Bidh daoine cuideachd a’ tighinn cruinn air loidhne, le bhith a’ co-roinneadh puist, stiùireadh fuaimneachaidh, dealbhan is videothan leis an taga-hais #SeachdainNaGàidhlig, le luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig agus daoine a tha dèidheil air a’ chànan a’ cruinneachadh mar choimhearsnachdan air loidhne agus far loidhne air feadh an t-saoghail; a’ toirt brosnachadh do dhaoine, gnìomhachasan is buidhnean coimhearsnachd san fharsaingeachd pàirt a ghabhail is cothrom air a’ Ghàidhlig a thoirt do bharrachd dhaoine.

Tha na gnìomhachdan is goireasan seo a’ gabhail a-staigh planadairean tidseir, susbaint is gnìomhachdan a mholamaid do sgoilearan aig ìre na bun-sgoile agus na h-àrd-sgoile, an dà chuid dhan fheadhainn ann am Foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig agus luchd-ionnsachaidh na Gàidhlig – a dhèanamh cinnteach gun urrainn dhan a h-uile tidsear is sgoilear a dhol an sàs ann, ged a tha iad fileanta no dìreach air tòiseachadh leis a’ chànan.

Thuirt Shona NicIllInnein, Ceannard Bhòrd na Gàidhlig, am prìomh bhuidheann-maoineachaidh aig Seachdain na Gàidhlig: “Tha sinn air leth toilichte taic a chur ris Seachdain na Gàidhlig a-rithist an dèidh na seachdain ro-shoirbheachail a bh’ aca sa chiad bhliadhna aca. Tha an t-seachdain seo a’ comharradh gach rud a tha co-cheangailte ris a’ Ghàidhlig – luchd-bruidhinn, luchd-ionnsachaidh, luchd-taice, an cànan, an cultar, na h-ealain, an ceòl agus an dualchas agus tha sinn air ar bioran prògram na bliadhna-sa fhaicinn. Thug sgeama maoin nan tachartasan beaga, luach £24,000, cothrom do bharrachd bhuidhnean tachartasan a chur air chois sna coimhearsnachdan aca fhèin agus thug e toileachas mòr dhuinn uiread a thagraidhean fhaicinn. A dh’aon inntinn le amasan Plana Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig, brosnaichidh, comharraichidh agus àbhaistichidh an t-seachdain seo a’ Ghàidhlig agus cuiridh e ri deagh shunnd dhaoine agus cruthaichidh agus neartaichidh i dàimhean Gàidhlig air feadh an t-saoghail. Chì sinn ann sibh!”

The programme invites anybody to organise / run their own event as part of the week and, for the first time, features projects directly funded by Seachdain na Gàidhlig through their Small Grants Fund.

Over 60 grant applications were received and checked by a panel including Joy Dunlop, with Steven Kellow, Funding and Projects Officer at Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Arthur Cormack, Chief Executive Officer, Fèisean nan Gàidheal; and 51 funded projects have been launched as part of the new programme of directly-funded events.

Seachdain na Gàidhlig Director Joy Dunlop said: “To have over 100 events taking place in the second ever Seachdain na Gàidhlig, 51 of them funded through our Small Grants Fund, is just phenomenal. We continue to be inspired by the ideas and plans coming to us from across the globe; most of which wouldn’t have been possible without the extra funding allocated to us by Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

Or if you’d like to take that first step on your Gaelic journey but don’t know how, do contact us through our website – we’re here to help.

The activities and resources include teacher planners, suggested content and activities aimed at both primary and secondary levels for both Gàidhlig medium and Gaelic Learners – ensuring that all children and teachers can get involved, whether they are fluent or just starting their journey with the language.

Shona NicIllinnein, Ceannard at Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Seachdain na Gàidhlig’s main funders, said: “We are delighted to support Seachdain na Gàidhlig again following on from the resounding success of its first year. This week celebrates everything about Gaelic –speakers, learners and supporters, the language, the culture, the arts, music and heritage and we are very much looking forward to this year’s offering. The Small Events Fund Scheme worth £24,000 will have enabled more groups to host their own events in their communities and we are hugely encouraged by the number of applicants. In line with the aims of the National Gaelic Language Plan, this week helps to promote, celebrate and normalise Gaelic as well as contribute to wellbeing and creating and strengthening connections in Gaelic worldwide. Chìsinn ann sibh!”

Building upon the success of their inaugural 2022 event, and their online campaign #SayAGaelicPhraseDay, Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023 is facilitated by Scottish traditional culture and music organisation Hands Up For Trad, wholaunched a raft of new initiatives this year. To celebrate and promote the importance and use of Gaelic within both cultural and commercial landscapes, various resources have been published online to help with education, marketing, and public relations, plus the new Small Grants Fund was introduced, awarding Micro-Grants of up to £500 to support initiatives.

Simon Thoumire, Director of Hands Up For Trad, the Scottish cultural organisation that founded and runs Seachdain na Gàidhlig, said: “We are really happy that Bord Na Gàidhlig have supported this project, which fits with Hands Up For Trad’s aims of supporting Gaelic culture and language.”
