Cèilidh Teaghlaich | Family Ceilidh

A family ceilidh celebrating World Gaelic Week in Sleat! Cèilidh band led by Iseabail Strachan with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s fabulous music students, turns from local young singers and instrumentalists, and featuring the choir from Bun-sgoil Shlèite, singing songs from the treasure trove of Stòras Shlèite’s collection. We’ll share some food in the middle, so bring a dish and come along to dance, sing and celebrate Sleat’s Gaelic language, culture and heritage.

Fèis Lochabair are planning an afternoon event to celebrate Seachdain na Gàidhlig along with Gaelic groups and organisations to celebrate Gaelic in Lohcaber.

An afternoon of music and a chance for people to come together and speak Gaelic – for those learning as well as those with a bit more of the language.

Gaelic Beach Walk

Join COAST and Fèis Arainn for an informative walk along the beach at Lamlash and meet some of the creatures that live on the shore. Learn their Gaelic names and a bit about the Arran’s Gaelic traditions of the sea.

Young Reporters: Gaelic in the Community [Keep Scotland Beautiful]

Tha sinn a’ toirt cuireadh do sgoilearan (Gàidhlig no Beurla) a bhith nan luchd‑aithris de Ghàidhlig, a’ rannsachadh mar a thathar a’ cleachdadh na Gàidhlig anns a’ choimhearsnachd aca agus a’ cruthachadh susbaint chruthachail a tha a’ riochdachadh na Gàidhlig san sgìre far a bheil iad a’ fuireach. Roinnidh sinn an t-susbaint aca air an làrach‑lìn againn agus air na meadhanan sòisealta.

Tha goireasan againn gus cuideachadh a thoirt seachad, agus mura h-eil na sgoilearan air na h‑aca a chrìochnachadh ro dheireadh an t‑seachdain, faodaidh iad barrachd ùine a ghabhail gus crìoch a chur air.

We invite pupils (Gaelic or English) to become reporters of Gaelic, exploring how Gaelic is used in their community and creating creative content that represents the language in the area where they live. We will share their content on our website and on social media.

We have resources available to support them, and if they haven’t finished their work by the end of the week, they can take an extra time to complete it.

Air loidhne Step Dance Workshop (Intemediate level)

Join us for this online step dance workshop as part of Seachdain na Gàidhlig, led by Scottish Step Dancer, Sophie Stephenson.

Step dance is a fun, active and social activity for all ages. The workshop will give you the opportunity to actively engage with traditional music and Gaelic culture, through dance. You will learn percussive style dance steps to strathspeys, jigs and reels. For wee ones, it helps them to learn rhythm and improve their coordination whilst, for adults it is a gentle way to improve stamina and strengthen muscles. Advised to wear hard soled shoes and bring a bottle of water!

Open to participants anywhere in the world, this online workshop offers a relaxed and supportive space to explore step dance, learn something new, and celebrate Gaelic culture during Seachdain na Gàidhlig. The class will be delivered in English, with Gaelic words, numbers, and simple phrases woven throughout, giving participants the opportunity to engage with Gaelic language and culture through dance and movement.

The class will be live on Zoom, with the option to receive a recorded version of the class if you can’t make it live.

The Hidden History of Gaelic Dance Traditions: Talk & Q&A with Michael Newton

There are several forms of dance that practiced in Gaelic communities and in Scotland in general, and many people claim that they date back to beyond the mists of time, but the forms of dance that survive into the present only began to emerge in the eighteenth century, and they were greatly changed in the second half of the nineteenth century. This presentation will provide a summary of the main influences that created Scottish dance as we have it in the present, especially in Gaelic contexts.

Dr Michael Newton earned a Ph.D. in Celtic Studies from the University of Edinburgh in 1998 and was an Assistant Professor in the Celtic Studies department of St Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia 2008-2013. He has written a multitude of books and articles about Gaelic culture and history and is a leading authority on Scottish Gaelic heritage in North America.
