Sùil air: Cnoc Soilleir // Case Study: Cnoc Soilleir

Air Seachdain na Gàidhlig, le taic bho Mhaoin nan Tabhartas Beag, bha sreath de thachartasan aig Cnoc Soilleir ann an Uibhist a Deas. Chlàraich iad daoine ag innse na seanfhaclan Gàidhlig a b’ fheàrr leotha agus chuir iad air na meadhanan sòisealta iad. Bha daoine aig gach ìre fileantais nan measg, bho luchd-Ionnsachaidh gu fileantaich.

Bha seisean còmhraidh neo-fhoirmeil aca gus daoine a bhrosnachadh gu bhith a’ bruidhinn na Gàidhlig. Fhuair iad teatha agus ceapairean agus bha seisean ciùil aca an sin cuideachd.

Bhruidhinn òraidichean air iasgach, gu h-àraidh an turas a bhios maorach a’ gabhail à Uibhist a Deas dhan Spàinn, agus chaidh am film ‘Maorach’ a bh’ air BBC Alba a shealltainn, air a chlàradh le Beatrix Wood.

Bha an susbaint air na meadhanan sòisealta uabhasach soirbheachail agus fhuairear measadh aig na tachartasan a bha gu math misneachail, le cuid sa choimhearsnachd a’ tadhal air Cnoc Soilleir airson a’ chiad turas. O Sheachdain na Gàidhlig tha barrachd dhaoine san sgìre air a bhith a’ frithealadh thachartasan san togalach agus tha iad air turais a chur air dòigh gus sealltainn dha daoine dè bhios a’ dol ann an Cnoc Soilleir agus dè a th’ ann dhan choimhearsnachd. Tha ùidh air nochdadh ann an clasaichean Gàidhlig aig Ceòlas, a bhios a’ gabhail àite san togalach.

Air Seachdain na Gàidhlig, nochd dithis oileanach a bha air greis gnìomhachais leis a’ chùrsa Gàidhlig is Conaltradh aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, agus rinn iadsan obair mòr ann a bhith a’ cuideachadh ag ullachadh thachartasan, ‘s chòrd e riutha glan a bhith a’ bruidhinn ri fileantaich. Bha iad a’ faireachdainn gun do dh’fhàs iad na bu chofhurtail ga bruidhinn agus gun do thog iad blas na sgìre na b’ fheàrr.

On Seachdain na Gàidhlig, with support from the Small Grants Fund (Bòrd na Gàidhlig), Cnoc Soilleir had a number of activities during the week. They recorded and uploaded to social media channels individuals telling their favourite Gàidhlig proverb. This ranged from total beginners to the language to fluent speakers.

They held a drop in session to encourage Gàidhlig conversation and give confidence to those learning the language. Tea and sandwiches were provided along with a live music session.

Guest speakers delivered a talk on Fishing, in particular the journey of shellfish from South Uist to Spain, and this was accompanied by footage from the BBC Alba film ‘Maorach’ filmed by local maker Beatrix Wood.
The social media posts were very popular and verbal feedback from events was positive with a number of individuals from the community visiting Cnoc Soilleir for the first time. Since Seachdain na Gàidhlig they have had an increased number of local people attending events in the building and quite a few guided tours to highlight what is available for community use. There has also been renewed interest in individuals wishing to attend in person Gàidhlig classes with Ceòlas which is homed in Cnoc Soilleir.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig also fitted perfectly with the arrival of two students on a 3 week placement from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig undertaking the CertHE Gaelic and Communication course. Both of them helped with the organising of events and commented on the pleasure of holding conversations with native Gàidhlig speakers. Both felt that their confidence in speaking the language and their understanding of local dialect had improved greatly.
