Stornoway’s An Taigh Cèilidh Now Open!

Written by Teàrlach Wilson for Seachdain na Gàidhlig:

Stornoway, Saturday 17th December 2022 and An Taigh Cèilidh opened: the first Gaelic community space in Scotland. On our launch day, we sang Christmas songs with those who called in for a cèilidh. Lots were singing, they were enjoying the coffee, and we sold a couple of maps and books. The builders aren’t quite ready and so we will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays throughout January while they finish their work, including the exterior walls. You could say this was our soft launch, and when we are ready, plenty more will be happening at An Taigh Ceilidh: daily events (e.g. conversation circles and homework clubs), special events (e.g. memorial events, live music), staff, heritage recording machines, and a shop. Until then, we will be open as a local café where you’ll get a cup of tea or coffee with 10% off if you order in Gaelic and you’ll never have an empty cup! Please follow us on social media (@taighceilidh) to follow our updates!

Maoin nan Tabhartas Beag // Small Grants Fund

Le 63 iarrtasan bho air feadh na dùthcha agus nas fhaide air falbh, fhuair sinn air taic-airgid a thoirt do ghrunn thachartasan agus phròiseactan a bhios a’ gabhail àite tro Sheachdain na Gàidhlig 2023. Bidh a h-uile neach is buidheann a fhuair tabhartas aig an ìre seo a-nis air fios fhaighinn, an cois pasgan-taic leis a h-uile càil a dh’fheumas sibh airson tachartas soirbheachail a chur air dòigh. Gu mì-fhortanach cha d’ fhuair sinn air a h-uile pròiseact a mhaoineachadh, ach tha sinn gu mòr an dòchas gum faic sinn iad a’ tighinn gu buil tro Sheachdain na Gàidhlig – cuimhnichibh gur ann leibhse a tha i! Ma tha taic a dhìth oirbh aig ìre sam bith, feuch gun cuir sibh fios oirnn air admin@seachdainnagaidhlig.scot.

Bu chaomh leinn taing mhòr a thoirt do Bhòrd na Gàidhlig airson na Maoin.

With 63 applications from across the country and further afield, we were able to fund a good number of events and projects which will be taking place throughout Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023. Every individual and group who received a grant has now been notified and provided with a support pack on how to run a successful event. Unfortunately we were unable to fund all the projects but we sincerely hope to see them take place during Seachdain na Gàidhlig – remember that the week is yours! If you require any support, please get in touch with us on admin@seachdainnagaidhlig.scot.

We would like to thank Bòrd na Gàidhlig for enabling us to provide the Small Grants Fund.

National Loganair Gaelic High Schools’ Debate

On 8th November, 20 teams from high schools across Scotland met to compete for the National Loganair Gaelic High Schools’ Debate. The first two days of debate were held in Stornoway and it was the teams of The Nicolson Institute A, Portree High School, Tarbert School A and Glasgow Gaelic High School who progressed to the semi-finals, held in Edinburgh on 29th November. Portree High School and Tarbert School A battled it out in the final on the 30th of November and Portree came out on top, with Jessica Mackay from Tarbert School A achieving the prize for the best speechmaker.

Joy Dunlop was a first-time judge alongside Agnes Rennie and Angus Maclennan, and she said it was a pleasure her to be among such hard-working children. She added that every team should be commended and praised for their preparation and work ethic.

Well done, Portree High School!

The group’s purpose is to provide MSPs with a mechanism for obtaining information, support, advice and views on issues relating to the Gaelic language and culture within a broad forum which represents Gaelic interests in Scotland. Joy Dunlop, our director, was in attendance representing Seachdain na Gàidhlig, and raised awareness of our project within a wide audience of different groups.

A panel will meet to decide on each grant and we will let applicants know before Monday 19th December. We are, as always, hugely grateful to Bòrd na Gàidhlig, without whom the fund would not have been possible.
