Cross-Party Group on Gaelic

The Cross-Party Group on Gaelic, of which Alasdair Allan MSP is chair and Bòrd na Gàidhlig is secretariat, met last Wednesday, 30th November 2022. The group’s purpose is to provide MSPs with a mechanism for obtaining information, support, advice and views on issues relating to the Gaelic language and culture within a broad forum which represents Gaelic interests in Scotland. Joy Dunlop, our director, was in attendance representing Seachdain na Gàidhlig, and raised awareness of our project within a wide audience of different groups.

Small Grants Fund Closed

We would like to thank every individual and group who submitted an application for funding support. We have had a look at the many wonderful and varied projects and events you have planned for Seachdain na Gàidhlig and we are more excited now than ever! A panel will meet to decide on each grant and we will let applicants know before Monday 19th December. We are, as always, hugely grateful to Bòrd na Gàidhlig, without whom the fund would not have been possible.

Dundee Gaelic Choir Needs You!

Do you live in or near Dundee? Are you interested in singing with a choir? Dundee Gaelic Choir is looking for new members – basses in particular! Now is a very good time to join a choir. If you are interested, please get in touch with Audrey Roshier on peapodaud@talktalk.net.

Information Sessions

We held a couple of successful information sessions about Seachdain na Gàidhlig on 3rd and 22nd November on Zoom, where we had a good number of people join us to find out more about the aims of the week. We even had a couple of folk tune in from Nova Scotia! There was a good conversation about the aims of the week and ideas on how everyone could be involved.

If you weren’t able to take part in either session but would like more information, please let us know on admin@seachdainnagaidhlig.scot and Grant or Shona would be delighted to arrange a Zoom call or a phonecall.

Gaelic Awards 2023

We are delighted to tell you that the Gaelic Awards will be held during Seachdain na Gàidhlig on Tuesday 21st February in the Glasgow Marriott Hotel! The Awards are run by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Daily Record and recognise the efforts individuals and groups are making to uphold and develop Gaelic across the country and the world. This will be the tenth year of the Gaelic Awards and they are now seeking nominations for winners across several categories. Take a look at their website https://scottishgaelicawards.co.uk/2023/en/page/home to submit your nominations before 8th January 2023 and to find out more about the event itself. It’s sure to be a great night!

Save the Dates!

Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week), which takes place between 20-26th February 2023, aims to celebrate Gaelic across the world. We would love to see schools, communities, individuals and groups taking part in the week whether you are fluent, learning or only have one or two words!

Take this as your cue to start thinking about how you could get involved. You could host a cèilidh or a coffee morning. You could promise to use only Gaelic across your social media for the week, or to teach a couple of Gaelic commands to your pets! Tell us your favourite phrases, or ask someone else how they could say something. The possibilities are endless!

If you have an idea for an event or are looking for some support or guidance, please don’t hesitate to contact us on admin@seachdainnagaidhlig.scot. We would be delighted to hear from you!

Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023

Seachdain na Gàidhlig aims to promote Gaelic for all, through official events and community initiatives, akin to Seachdain na Gaeilge in Ireland and Mìos nan Gàidheal in Nova Scotia. Taking place from 20th – 26th February 2023, it will provide the opportunity for both Gaelic speakers and learners to get involved and celebrate the language at home and internationally.
A new funding pot has today been announced for the 2023 event, which will allow people to apply for up to £500 to run events and activities in their communities to celebrate Gaelic. Backed by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, applications are open now at https://seachdainnagaidhlig.scot/.

James Graham, Chief Executive Officer of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: “Young Gaelic speakers are very important in shaping the future of our community, and these events today highlight their incredible skills and potential. We’re particularly excited for the first ever Struth event and to give youngsters an opportunity to engage in everyday chat with some of the best-known Gaelic speakers in Scotland.
“The Mòd is a unique platform for the promotion of Gaelic language and culture and it’s fantastic to start the week with the official launch of World Gaelic Week 2023. It’s always exciting to see the new, innovative ways our community comes together to promote the language for all.”

Joy Dunlop, Director Seachdain na Gàidhlig, said: “We’re delighted to announce the second ever Seachdain Na Gàidhlig with this year’s theme being Coming Together, inspired by the post-pandemic recovery.
“The first  official Gaelic language week ever held in Scotland took place last year. It was a great success and we can’t wait to build on this in 2023. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to celebrate and use Gaelic in their daily lives and recognise the language nationally and internationally.

“We would encourage any group, big or small, interested in organising an event as part of Seachdain Na Gàidhlig to apply for one of our small grants.”

The Royal National Mòd is supported by EventScotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Perth & Kinross Council, The Scottish Government, Caledonian MacBrayne and SQA.
