Ranger Talk: Heritage Grains

26th Feb 2026
7:30pm - 9:00pm
Venue:
Board Room, North Harris Trust Office
Tigh an Urrais, Harris, United Kingdom, HS3 3DB

The ranger talk this month is timed to coincide with Seachdain na Gàidhlig. This year’s theme is “Cleachd i no Caill i” (Use it or lose it), so I decided to make ‘Heritage Grains’ the topic for this month’s ranger talk. I am especially going to focus on eòrna (bere barley) which is a cereal crop with a long history of being grown in the Western Isles, as well as Shetland and Orkney. I have also been in contact with the James Hutton Institute who have kindly offered to supply some seeds from Western Isles grown varieties and there should be enough for people to take some home with them to try growing themselves.

The talk will be free but there is a suggested donation of £5. Please let me know if you are interested in attending so I can get an idea of numbers.

Maor-dùthcha na Hearadh/North Harris Trust Ranger is funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and NatureScot.
