SEALL celebrates Seachdain na Gàidhlig / Gaelic Language Week

SEALL is delighted to announce a vibrant programme of four community events taking place across Skye and Lochalsh as part of Seachdain na Gàidhlig / Gaelic Language Week. Events will be held in Raasay, Sleat and Waternish. All events are free to attend.

📍 Raasay

20 February | 12.30pm–2pm
Raasay Community Hall

The programme begins on 20 February with a special community session at Raasay Community Hall from 12pm–2pm, delivered in partnership with Alzheimer’s Scotland. The afternoon will feature live music, tea and warm company.

📍 Sleat

26 February | 6pm–8.30pm
An Crùbh

On 26 February, SEALL will partner with Chomhairle Pharant Bun-sgoil Shlèite to host a community cèilidh from 6pm–8.30pm. The event promises an evening of traditional music, dance and celebration for families and community members of all ages.

📍 Waternish

28 February | 3pm–6pm
The Stein Inn

In Waternish, a lively community session will take place at the iconic Stein Inn from 3pm–6pm. Led by acclaimed local musicians Kathleen MacDonald and Cae Pelletti, the session is open to everyone — whether you would like to sit back and enjoy the music or bring along an instrument and join in. All ages and abilities are welcome.

1 March | 2pm–4pm
An Crùbh

The week concludes on 1 March with the final event in SEALL’s popular winter Jam Bus series at An Crùbh from 2pm–4pm. This relaxed afternoon session will bring the community together to mark the end of Gaelic Language Week and look ahead to spring with music and shared celebration.

Come to our informal Gaelic conversation circle, all levels and fluency welcome.

Tea and cakes with games in Gaelic

A chance to meet our friendly local Gaelic learners group, find out about resources for learning Gaelic and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a choice of home-made cakes.

Also lots of fun learning games will be available, from Gaelic Dominoes, Gaelic Scrabble and Gaelic Bingo. Also find out how to pronounce the names of Munroes that you may have climbed and discover how many local placenames are derived from Gaelic origins. We might even have a sing along with popular Gaelic songs.

Classes on Monday and Tuesday evenings for everyone, learners and fluent speakers, to sing and learn some Gaelic songs together.

Gaelic Gathering

Ceangalaidhean Coimhearsnachd will be a community celebration bringing together children from Bowmore Primary School’s Gaelic classes and Sgoil-Araich, their parents, teachers, and the wider Gaelic speaking community from Islay and Jura. Children from Islay High School Gaelic class and their parents will also be invited. The event will take the form of a traditional cèilidh — an afternoon of traditional music, song, highland and cèilidh dancing, and refreshments — showcasing local Gaelic talent and heritage. Activities will include performances by school pupils, community musicians, Islay High School Trad Band and a local cèilidh band who will provide the music for dancing. Throughout the event there will be opportunities to for everyone to connect as a Gaelic speaking community.
