From Milton in South Uist, Màiri MacMillan was brought up surrounded by Gaelic language, culture, music, and song. Her family is grounded in a strong Gaelic background going back many generations, leading to her love of both the language and music of her roots.
Gaelic is Màiri’s first language and Gaelic songs and traditions, were and are always an important part of family life.
Màiri began singing from an early age at local Mods and community ceilidhs. It was at Fèis Tìr a Mhurainn that she was first taught by Iseabail T MacDonald. Iseabail T taught her many Gaelic songs, introducing her to recordings of many tradition bearers of the past century.
Throughout Scotland, Màiri has had opportunities to sing and teach Gaelic songs and been fortunate to travel to Ireland and USA to sing in Gaelic. Màiri was a Traditional Gold Medal winner at the 2007 Mod in Lochaber. She is now living, singing and teaching in Glasgow.
